What this calculator includes

More than a savings total.

The projection combines savings growth, future contributions, estimated income from investments, Social Security, pensions, other income, inflation, and the number of years the retirement portfolio may need to support.

01

Accumulation phase

Current savings and monthly contributions grow until the planned retirement age using the selected pre-retirement return.

02

Income phase

The retirement balance is converted into an estimated level monthly payment over the modeled retirement period using the selected retirement return.

03

Income gap

The estimated portfolio income and recurring income sources are compared with the desired monthly income after inflation.

Common questions

Retirement income calculator questions.

How does this calculator estimate retirement income?+
It first projects current savings and monthly contributions to retirement using compound growth. It then estimates a level monthly payment from the retirement balance over the selected retirement period and adds Social Security, pension, and other recurring income.
Should Social Security be entered in today's dollars?+
Use a personalized estimate from the Social Security Administration when available. This calculator treats the entered amount as monthly income beginning at retirement and separately inflates the desired income goal.
Does the result include taxes or investment fees?+
No. The calculator does not estimate federal or state taxes, account-specific tax treatment, advisory fees, fund expenses, Medicare premiums, or required minimum distributions.
What investment return should I use?+
Use a conservative planning assumption that reflects the type of portfolio being modeled. Returns are uncertain and can vary considerably from year to year. Testing several lower-return scenarios can reveal how sensitive the plan may be.
Why is inflation included?+
Inflation reduces purchasing power. The calculator increases the desired monthly income to show approximately what the entered goal may equal at the planned retirement age under the selected inflation assumption.
Does this replace a retirement plan from a professional?+
No. It is an educational scenario tool. A professional can consider taxes, account types, survivor needs, healthcare, long-term care, market sequence risk, estate goals, and other personal factors not modeled here.
