What the calculator compares

See how the repayment method changes the plan.

The calculator applies minimum payments to every active debt and directs the remaining monthly amount toward the next debt in the selected priority order.

01

Debt snowball

The smallest active balance receives the extra payment first, regardless of its interest rate.

02

Debt avalanche

The active debt with the highest annual interest rate receives the extra payment first.

03

Rolled payments

When one debt is paid, the available payment is redirected toward the next active balance.

Method and privacy: Calculations run in the browser using monthly interest estimates. Entries are not sent to MegaTools.tools or stored in a user account. Actual lender calculations, fees, changing rates, and payment timing may differ.

Common questions

Debt payoff calculator questions.

What is the debt snowball method? +
The debt snowball method directs extra money toward the debt with the smallest balance. After that debt is paid, the available payment moves to the next-smallest balance.
What is the debt avalanche method? +
The debt avalanche method directs extra money toward the active debt with the highest annual interest rate. It often reduces total interest, although the result depends on the balances and payments entered.
Why must the monthly budget cover every minimum payment? +
The calculator assumes every active account receives at least the minimum payment. A monthly budget below the combined minimums cannot produce a valid repayment schedule.
Why might the actual payoff date be different? +
Actual results can differ because of daily interest calculations, fees, variable rates, new purchases, skipped payments, lender rules, payment timing, and account changes.
Does this calculator save my financial information? +
No account or server-side saving is built into this page. Calculations run in the browser during the current session.
